Filtonis a town inSouth Gloucestershire,England, situated on the northern outskirts of the city ofBristol, about 4.5 miles (7.2km) from the city centre. Filton lies in Bristol postcode areas BS7 and BS34. The town centres upon FiltonChurch, which dates back to the 12th century and is a grade IIlisted building.[1]Further north are the towns ofPatchwayandBradley Stoke.

The name of the town comes from theOld Englishfeleþe(hay), andtūn(farm, field). The name dates back to at least 1187.

Filton has large areas of open space, which includes several playing fields, a golf course and a large airfield,Bristol-Filton.

Districts

within the town includeFilton ParkandNorthville. East Filton, which has grown up east of theBristol-South Wales railway line, contains the offices of the Ministry of DefenceDefence Procurement Agency, plus a shopping park.

Filton can be reached from Junction 1 of theM32 motorway, or from Junction 16 of theM5 motorway. The town has a railway station,Filton Abbey Wood.

Filton has anaerospaceconnection dating back to the early days of theBristol Aeroplane Company. Aerospace companies in Filton includeBAE Systems,Airbus,Rolls-RoyceandMBDAfactories, all located aroundFilton Aerodrome. On 26 November 2003,Concorde216 (G-BOAF)made the final ever Concorde flight, returning to Filton to be kept there permanently as the centrepiece of a projected air museum.This museum will include the existing Bristol Aero Collection which is kept atKemble Airport, 33 miles (53km) from Filton. This collection includes aBristol Britanniaaircraft.

Other organisations include theMOD,Viridor,Hewlett Packardand theRoyal Mail. Filton is also home to the regional blood processing facility,NHS Blood and TransplantFilton.

Filton's educational facilities includeSouth Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Abbeywood Community School and several primary schools. TheUniversity of the West of Englandis at nearbyFrenchay.

Filton has two main shopping areas - the Shield Centre (on the site of the former Shield Laundry) and Abbey Wood Retail Park, as well as other shops. To the east of the town there is a small area of woodland known as Splatt's Abbey Wood.

Aircraft hangars onFilton Airfield. TheBristol Brabazon,Bristol BritanniaandConcordeaircraft were constructed here.

Bristol Carswas a manufacturer of hand-built luxury cars, based in Filton. Bristol Cars had no distributors nor dealers and dealt directly with customers; they had a showroom in Kensington in London. They claimed to be the last wholly British-owned luxury car builder. The company went into administration on the 3rd March 2011.
